Keeping your engine well maintained can save wear and tear on expensive engine parts and save you plenty of money down the road. Changing your oil frequently and using the right kind of motor oil keeps your engine lubricated and running smoothly.

As liquids heat up, their physical properties change. This is also true of the oil you put in your engine, and its viscosity rating is a measure of how quickly it moves. Cold oil moves very slowly, while oil that has been sitting in a hot engine flows very quickly. The viscosity rating on a bottle of motor oil may read "5W30." The 5W indicates how quickly it moves when it is cold, and the 30 indicates its speed once it is hot.
