When your vehicle needs a little more traction to get you moving, you engage the four-wheel-drive (4WD) setting. The action of moving from two-wheel to four-wheel drive takes place in the transfer case. Either you shift it using the vehicle’s lever, or the system automatically determines if the road conditions warrant 4WD.

The transfer case consists of either a chain or a set of gears that transfers the motion of the transmission through the front and rear driveshafts to both axles. There are varying speeds within 4WD, but the general idea is to lower the vehicle’s speed and allow all four wheels to turn at the same rate.

If you notice gears that are grinding or hard to shift, it may be time to have your 4WD serviced. Stop by Casa Mitsubishi when you’re in need of vehicle service. Our knowledgeable technicians are here to answer any questions for drivers in the local Albuquerque, NM area.
